About Us

Glossop & District Branch

Of The Embroiderers’ Guild

Glossop and District  Embroiderers’ Guild was formed in October 2004 and is part of the North West Region of the Embroiderers’ Guild.  Our central aim is to act as a hub for all who are attracted to or experienced in embroidery/stitch, textiles, and related arts and crafts. We are supportive of all levels of ability whether for personal enjoyment through an increasingly rewarding and enriching experience or personal accomplishment. We strive to be outward facing, be relevant to the widest stitch community and be seen to make a difference on behalf of embroidery and textile art.   We offer a varied programme throughout the year. This can typically  include practical workshops which draw upon the wide expertise of our members, workshops and lectures by visiting speakers from a diverse range of textile practices and visits to related exhibitions and venues. We are currently involved in the Embroiderers’ Guild regional and national projects such as Travelling Books and the 2016 Capability Brown project, running in conjunction with the National Trust and English Heritage. Through participating in these projects, we can offer our members the opportunity to work collaboratively with other branches in the region and provide opportunities to share their ideas and work with a wider audience.  We make full use of the resources on offer at the Embroiderers’ Guild HQ. These include a range of portfolios which are  loaned  to the branch for an extended period. This allows our members the opportunity to gain insights into different textile techniques, skills and processes as well as gaining a wider understanding of the social and historical contexts of the work. They are also a valuable starting point for supplementary workshops based around individual themes. It is always interesting to see how individual members interpret subject matter in very different ways!  Members are offered the opportunity to exhibit their work on a regular basis in local venues and we hold an annual Rose Bowl competition which is judged by our members at the AGM.  We have a modest library of textile related books and we strive to keep up to date with the addition of  new publications. Books can be requested and borrowed for 50p per month. We also have an embellisher which can be reserved and hired for £5 per month.

We  recognise the importance  of sharing our practice and insights with new recruits. Some  of our members have a history with the Guild going back over a number of years and highlight  the importance of this  supportive organisation in developing their love of all things textile.  We offer a warm welcome to visitors and new members alike from beginners to experts.  We are sure that you will enjoy our varied programme and make new friends who share similar interests and enthusiasms.  Our Branch meetings are held on the last Wednesday of the month, from 1.00 pm to 3.00 pm at Glossop Cricket and Bowling Club, North Road, Glossop.  There is plenty of parking and disabled access to the meeting room.Currently, the annual subscription to join the Embroiderers’ Guild is £30 (this can be paid directly to headquarters via Direct Debit or annually by credit card). The Branch subscription is £8 and £1 of this goes to the North West Regional Group. The total of £38 can be paid to the branch by cheque and the money will be forwarded to HQ. The monthly entrance fee, including refreshments is £2 for members and £3 for visitors who may attend 3 of our meetings in any one-year. The year runs from September to July.  Membership last until the 31st August with an annual summer lunch to round off the year  So now you know all about us! We hope that you will come along and enjoy your initial visit and be  inspired to return and join our group.
