Shelagh Thornber – Lytham Branch

1934 – 2019

It is with great sadness Lytham St. Annes Branch announce the death of Shelagh Thornber, a member of the Guild for over 30 years.  She served on the Branch committee and made a significant contribution to the activities of the Branch, particularly during the biennial exhibitions of work. She was a superb stitcher, an expert in counted thread techniques such as Hardanger and Ruskin Work, as well as making beautiful boxes and needlework accessories with finely detailed designs. She was also a valued member of the Lacemakers Guild, again producing exquisite fine work.  She enjoyed the challenge of new learning new techniques undertaking C &G parts 1 & 2, attending workshops with experts such as Nicola Jarvis and Anne McTavish, and travelling to Devon to learn to make Honiton Lace. Her love of textiles was also important during regular holidays in Tenerife where she learned the specialised techniques from local skilled people; the shared interest overcame the lack of a common language. She will be remembered for her generosity in sharing her extensive stash of materials as well as her willingness to share her expertise. We will miss her.
